The routine is shopping guidance built on a cosmetic analysis of visible skin. Not a medical diagnosis; does not replace a dermatologist.
Key terms
- Routine step: a slot in the routine, such as cleanser, serum, eye cream, moisturizer or SPF.
- AM routine: the morning sequence, which usually ends with sun protection.
- PM routine: the evening sequence, often with richer or targeted steps.
- Product Connect: the Face Age page where you assign each product to concerns, severity levels and a routine step.
- Analysis Result: the screen after a scan, with Skin Report, Routine and Products tabs.
Why shoppers ask for a routine, not just a product
Searches like "are there smart tools that build routines using facial analysis?" and "best online skin analysis tool for recommending skincare routine" show what many shoppers really want. They do not only want to know which serum to buy. They want to know what goes first, what goes at night and what to skip.
A routine answers that in a format people already understand. It also gives a store a natural way to show several products together, each with a clear job, instead of a long grid of options.
How does an AI routine generator work?
The Face Age flow has four parts:
- You map products to routine steps. In Product Connect, each product gets a morning or night step, for example "eye cream" under night routine. Products without a step stay out of the routine but can still be recommended.
- The scan sets the concerns. The analysis rates each concern as low, medium or high, and the top concerns guide which product fills each step.
- Two routines are assembled. An AM routine, ordered from cleanse to protect and ending with SPF, and a PM routine.
- The shopper sees it. The routine appears on the Routine tab of the Analysis Result and in the downloadable PDF report.
When the same shopper scans again later, the routine is rebuilt from the new result, so it follows how their concerns changed.
AM vs PM: what usually goes where?
The table below is a general guide to how stores tend to assign steps. You decide the final mapping for your own products.
| Step | Morning (AM) | Night (PM) |
|---|---|---|
| Cleanser | Gentle cleanser | Cleanser, or a double cleanse |
| Serum | Lightweight or brightening serum | Targeted serum for the shopper's top concern |
| Eye care | Light eye gel | Richer eye cream |
| Moisturizer | Light moisturizer | Richer night cream |
| Sun protection | SPF as the final step | Not used |
Empty steps are removed automatically. If you have no eye products, the routine simply skips that step rather than showing a blank slot.
How to set up routines in Face Age
All of this lives in Shopify Admin > Apps > Face Age.
- Connect products. Open Connect Products, select products and assign each one a morning or night routine step. Add concerns and severity levels in the Condition box.
- Choose routine options. In Customization > Routine, pick morning, night or both, and set the routine steps you want to show.
- Add an optional banner and discount. The same Routine settings let you add a banner and a Shopify discount code with an expiry date and a call to action.
- Turn the routine on. In Customization > Basic, make sure the routine is enabled alongside product recommendations.
- Preview a scan. Run a test analysis and check that each step pulls a sensible product.
The routines feature page shows how the finished routine looks to shoppers.
Tips for routines that make sense
- Cover the basics first. A cleanser, a moisturizer and an SPF mapped for all severity levels make sure every shopper gets a complete routine.
- Use severity for targeted steps. Map stronger serums to medium or high levels of the concern they address.
- Respect sensitive skin. Use Extra Condition exclusions so quiz answers like "sensitive skin" keep strong actives out of the routine.
- Write product names and descriptions clearly. If you use Automate AI to map products, it reads that copy.
- Keep it short. Four or five steps per routine are easier to follow than eight.
For more on how products are matched to concerns, see the recommendations feature page.
Where does the routine show up after the scan?
The routine is not a one-time screen. It travels with the shopper:
- On the Routine tab of the Analysis Result, right after the scan.
- In the branded PDF report the shopper can download from the document icon.
- In scan history, where returning shoppers can reopen an earlier result with its routine.
- In your email flows, when you connect tools like Klaviyo or Mailchimp.
That is why routines pair well with history and comparison, which are also Plus features. Our post on personalized skincare routines covers the shopper experience, and how to boost repeat purchases with AI-generated routines covers the return-visit side.
