Klaviyo Skincare Segmentation From AI Skin Analysis Results

Klaviyo skincare segmentation with Face Age works in two layers. Each completed scan is sent to Klaviyo as a "Face Age Recommendation" event, which you use to trigger a results flow. And when the Shopify Customers integration is on, skin-concern tags land on the Shopify customer, sync into Klaviyo's Shopify Tags property, and become segments. The Klaviyo integration comes with the Plus plan and above.

Quick context on what's being sent: the scan is a cosmetic analysis of visible skin from one photo, used to suggest products and routines. Not a medical diagnosis; does not replace a dermatologist. Keep your email copy in that same register.

Key terms

  • Face Age Recommendation: the API metric Face Age sends to Klaviyo after an analysis. It shows up under Metrics > API when you build a flow.
  • Shopify Customers integration: the Face Age connection that saves shoppers who entered an email and finished a scan to your Shopify customer list, tagged with their skin concerns.
  • Shopify Tags: the Klaviyo profile property that holds a customer's Shopify tags as a list.
  • Basic Email: Face Age's built-in results email (Face Age's server or your own SMTP). It switches off while Klaviyo or Mailchimp is connected.

Where does the email address come from?

This is where most setups go wrong, so start here. A scan on its own doesn't collect an email. The address comes from the Email element in your Face Age quiz. You can add one Email element per quiz, and its label can't be renamed.

If you don't ask for an email, there's nothing to send to Klaviyo for that shopper. So decide where the question goes. Face Age can show the quiz before the analysis or right before the results. Asking just before results tends to feel more natural to shoppers: they've already done the work and want to see what came out. Our guide to building a skincare quiz on Shopify covers both placements.

Step 1: Connect Face Age to Klaviyo

  1. In Shopify Admin, open Apps > Face Age, then either click Connect CRM on the main page or go to Customization > Integrations & Connect CRM.
  2. Open the Klaviyo box and click Connect. It asks for two keys.
  3. In Klaviyo, go to Settings > API Keys. Copy the Public API Key into the first field in Face Age.
  4. Back in Klaviyo, click Create Private API Key, name it something you'll recognize later ("Face Age" is fine), choose Full Access, and create it. Paste it into the second field.
  5. Click Next. Face Age shows you an HTML template to copy. Keep that tab open.

A word on the private key. Full Access is what the integration asks for, so handle it like a password: don't paste it into a shared doc, and if you ever uninstall Face Age, revoke that key in Klaviyo. Naming it clearly makes that easy to do a year from now.

Step 2: Build the results flow in Klaviyo

  1. In Klaviyo, go to Flows > Create Flow > Build your own. Name it (for example "Face Age results") and create it.
  2. For the trigger, open Metrics, choose API, and select Face Age Recommendation. Save.
  3. Drag an Email block into the flow and open it.
  4. Set the subject line, sender name and smart sending options.
  5. Under Select Template, choose Create HTML Template, delete the starter code, paste the HTML from Face Age, and save.
  6. Switch the email and then the flow from Draft to Live using Update Status. If you edited the subject line earlier, double-check it stuck.

Step 3: Test before you switch it on

Go back to Face Age, enter your own address as the test email and click Test API. When the email arrives, read it on your phone. Check the logo, the product images, and that the links go to the right products. Then click Save & Active.

If nothing arrives, the usual suspects are a flow still in Draft, the wrong metric chosen as the trigger, or a private key without full access.

Step 4: Turn on Shopify Customers so tags exist

The results flow handles the first email. Segmentation needs tags, and those come from a different box on the same Integrations page.

  1. In Integrations & Connect CRM, open Shopify Customers and click Active.
  2. Have a test shopper (you, with a fresh email) take the quiz and scan.
  3. In Shopify Admin, open Customers and find that email. You'll see skin-concern tags on the customer.

Write down the exact tag text you see. You'll need it character for character in Klaviyo, and I'd rather you copy it from a real customer than guess at the format.

If you also want the full record (photos, quiz answers, routine and recommendations) stored with the customer, there's a Save analysis data setting inside the Shopify Customers settings. That's mainly for history across devices; you don't need it for tag-based segments.

Step 5: Build skincare segments in Klaviyo

Klaviyo's Shopify integration syncs customer tags into a list property called Shopify Tags. Klaviyo's help center documents the segment builder for it:

  1. Go to Audience > Lists & segments > Create > Segment.
  2. Choose Properties about someone > Shopify Tags. The type sets itself to List.
  3. Pick contains the text and enter the full tag value you copied from Shopify.
  4. Add more conditions with AND (has every tag) or OR (has at least one).

A second, simpler segment is worth having too: What someone has done > Face Age Recommendation > at least once. That's everyone who completed a scan and gave you an address, regardless of concern. It's useful for a general "your routine" newsletter or for excluding scanners from your generic welcome series.

Klaviyo skincare segmentation ideas worth building

Segment Built from What you'd send
Scanned at least once Face Age Recommendation metric Routine reminders, "scan again" invites
One concern Shopify Tags contains the dark-circles tag Eye-area education, your eye creams
Two concerns together Pores tag AND redness tag A gentler texture routine rather than your strongest exfoliant
Scanned, never ordered Scan metric AND Placed Order zero times A reminder of their recommended products

Don't build twenty segments on day one. Start with the "scanned" segment and two or three concerns that match where your range is strongest. You can always split further once you know who's actually in them.

How do you use segments inside a flow?

You don't have to send everyone the same follow-up. Klaviyo lets you add a profile filter or a conditional split on Shopify Tags inside a flow. So one "after scan" flow can branch: people tagged for dryness get your barrier-repair edit, people tagged for pigmentation get your vitamin C content. The routines feature page shows what a shopper sees on screen, which is a good reference for keeping email copy consistent with the result.

A few things to watch

  • Order tags are a different story. Face Age also tags Shopify orders placed after an analysis, which is handy in Shopify reports. Klaviyo's docs say tags added to an order after it's processed don't sync, so check whether that tag appears in Klaviyo before you build anything on it.
  • Consent still applies. A tag doesn't mean someone opted in to marketing. Klaviyo syncs marketing consent from Shopify; respect it, and keep the results email transactional in tone.
  • Wording. Say "your scan suggested" or "your routine", and avoid medical-sounding language. Keep promises out of subject lines.
  • One sender per result. With Klaviyo connected, Basic Email is off. That's deliberate, so shoppers don't get two results emails.

Which plan do you need?

Klaviyo and Mailchimp integrations are on Plus ($129/month on Shopify) and above. Face Age also connects to Omnisend, HubSpot, Google Analytics and Facebook Pixel, and has webhooks. Compare plans on the pricing page.

FAQ

How does Face Age send data to Klaviyo? As an API metric called Face Age Recommendation after each analysis, which you use as a flow trigger.

Can I segment Klaviyo profiles by skin concern? Yes, with Shopify Customers active. Concern tags sync to the Shopify Tags property and you segment on that.

Why can't I use Basic Email after connecting Klaviyo? It's disabled while Klaviyo or Mailchimp is connected, so results aren't sent twice.

Which Face Age plan includes the Klaviyo integration? Plus ($129/month) and above.

Do I need a developer? No. Keys, a Klaviyo flow and a pasted HTML template are enough.
