A Returning-Shopper Playbook: History, Compare, PDF and Email

Returning skincare customers do not need another homepage banner. They need a reason to scan again, a way to see what changed, a file they can keep, and an email that respects the last result instead of restarting from zero. Face Age's Plus-and-above stack — analysis history, before-and-after compare, branded PDF and ESP connections — is built for that loop. This playbook shows how the four pieces work together on a Shopify beauty store.

You're not reading a conversion-case study. No invented lifts. Just the setup order that stops the "scan once, never come back" pattern.

Key terms: Analysis history stores prior scans for a shopper. Compare is the side-by-side view with Improved / Regressed / Stable tags. The PDF report is the branded download from the result screen. ESP means your email tool (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, and similar).

Why first-time scan UX is not enough for returning skincare customers

A first visit is curiosity: open camera, see concerns, click a serum. A second visit is accountability. Shoppers ask whether the barrier cream did anything, whether redness calmed down, and which products to repurchase. If your store only ever shows a fresh blank scan, you throw away the context they already gave you.

Plus features exist to keep that context inside your storefront and your CRM. Start ($59/month) is fine for proving the scan works. Returning-shopper work usually means Plus ($129), Growth ($249) or Scale ($499), with the 7-day trial on the Shopify listing. Confirm live numbers on pricing.

The four pieces at a glance

Piece Where it lives What the shopper gets Merchant setup note

Deep dives already live on the blog for history storage modes, reading Improved/Regressed/Stable, PDF report setup and Klaviyo segmentation. Feature URLs: history, compare, skin report.

Step 1 - Turn on history with the right storage mode

Go to Customization > Basic and enable analysis history. Then pick a storage mode:

  1. Browser only - fastest, local to the device. Fine for anonymous window shoppers. Weak when the same person switches phone to laptop.
  2. Server API - needs a logged-in customer or email capture so the profile can reload on another device.
  3. Both - API first, browser fallback.

If you want the full archive (photos, quiz answers, routine, recommendations) tied to Shopify customers, also enable Save analysis data under Customization > Integrations & Connect CRM > Shopify Customers > Settings. Pair that with Server API or Both. Premium (Plus+) plans.

Merchant trade-off: Server modes need a clear privacy disclosure for selfies and stored results. Update the policy before you flip the switch - we outlined the topics in AI skin analysis privacy.

Step 2 - Publish compare and teach the result screen

With history on, set up comparison from Dashboard > What's new > Set Up Comparison. On a return scan, the Compare tab sits next to Skin Report, Routine and Products. The shopper picks an earlier scan; Face Age shows side-by-side imagery and a Skin Metrics Diff. Each concern is tagged Improved, Regressed or Stable, with a summary box.

Write storefront microcopy that stays cosmetic. "Your dryness score looks more stable than last month" is fine. "Your dermatitis is cured" is not. Always: Not a medical diagnosis; does not replace a dermatologist.

Train support so they do not over-interpret diffs. Stable can mean the product is maintaining, not failing. Regressed can mean season, stress or a bad selfie - which is why photo quality tips matter on the scan step.

Step 3 - Brand the PDF before you attach it to email

Shoppers download the PDF from the document icon at the top right of the Analysis Result. On Plus+, that report is redesigned for brand fit and detail. Brand it before you promise "we'll email your report" in a flow. An unbranded PDF teaches shoppers that the scan belongs to a third party. A branded one feels like your consult.

Useful PDF jobs for returning skincare customers:

  • Attach to the post-scan email as the keepsake.
  • Reference in a 30-day "scan again" reminder.
  • Give wholesale or advisor partners a shareable artifact (still cosmetic language only).

Step 4 - Wire email so the second message is not a cold start

Connect Klaviyo or Mailchimp on Plus+. Push concern properties or tags from the scan, then build segments that match how you merchandise: dryness + barrier, pigmentation focus, acne-prone, etc. The first email can deliver the PDF and routine. The second email, days later, should assume they already scanned - invite a compare scan, not another from-scratch quiz.

A simple cadence many stores start with:

  1. Immediate: results summary + PDF + top matched products.
  2. Day 3–5: routine adherence nudge with the AM/PM products from the generator.
  3. Day 25–35: "Ready to compare?" with a link back to the scan placement.
  4. Winback: only if they never scanned again - different creative, same concern segment.

Keep offers honest. A compare invite with a small reorder incentive beats a blast that pretends they are new.

Step 5 - Put the loop on the storefront, not only in email

History and compare fail quietly if the scan is buried. Returning shoppers need a durable entry point:

  • A section on the account page or a "Your skin" menu item for logged-in customers.
  • The customer analysis history block paired with Server API / Both.
  • Product Insight on PDPs so a repurchase still explains the match.

Placement choices are covered in modal vs section. For a fuller consult framing, see virtual skin consultation.

Common failure modes

History on, compare never set up. Shoppers see old scans but no diff language. Finish the What's new setup.

Browser-only history + heavy mobile/desktop switching. Profiles look empty. Move to Both if email capture is acceptable.

PDF attached, ESP never segmented. You sent a file; you did not build a returning-customer system.

Support uses medical verbs in compare tickets. Retrain. Cosmetic scores only.

Start plan expectations. If you need history/PDF/compare, upgrade to Plus+ before promising the playbook in your onboarding email.
