Product Insight does not run the analysis by itself, and it does not replace the rules you set in Connect products. It explains a match that already exists. The scan remains a cosmetic reading of a photo. Not a medical diagnosis; does not replace a dermatologist.
Key terms
- Product Insight: a Face Age app block used only on product page templates to explain whether the current item fits the shopper's latest scan.
- Core extension: the Modal (app-embed floating button popup) or Section (page block) that launches the analysis. This has to be published first.
- Customer Recommended Products: a carousel of items matched to the scan, for homepages, collections or a results area.
- Encouragement Banner: a full-width banner that invites a first scan or points a returning visitor back to results.
- Customer analysis history: a block that shows recent scores to a logged-in shopper. Pair it with Server API or Both storage.
How this differs from placement and from matching rules
Two other posts cover nearby jobs, and it helps to keep them separate.
Shopify skin analyzer placement is about where the scan launches: a floating button that opens a popup, or a section you drop onto a page. Product Insight assumes that decision is already made.
How AI skin analysis picks products is about the Admin rules: concern, severity, extra conditions, exclusions. Product Insight does not create those rules. It reads the latest analysis and the current product, then explains the match on the page the shopper is viewing.
If the matching rules are thin, Product Insight will have little to say. If the core extension is off, the optional blocks have nothing to show. Feature documentation describes the Publish page as "core first."
What skin analysis on product page should show
The merchant help page for storefront extensions describes the block in concrete terms. After a scan, Product Insight can:
- Show whether the current product matches the shopper's skin analysis.
- Mark the item as recommended when it does.
- List the concerns the product targets (the help page uses examples such as eye bags or wrinkles).
- Offer a Scan again button.
Because the message refers to "this product," the block belongs on a product template only. It is not available on the homepage, collection pages or other templates. That limit is easy to miss if you try to add every Face Age block to every template in one session.
A shopper who never scanned will not have a latest analysis for the block to explain. In that case they still need a way to start the scan, which is the core Modal or Section, or the Encouragement Banner on pages where you want a prompt.
The other optional blocks, so you do not mix them up
The same Publish page and help article list three companions. Use them for different jobs.
| Block | Where it belongs | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Product Insight | Product page template only | Explains why the current item matches the latest scan |
| Customer Recommended Products | Homepage, collections, a results area, or below a Skin Analyzer section | Carousel of matched products; cards can show concern tags, price and Add to cart |
| Encouragement Banner | Homepage, collections, or near results | Invites a guest to start a scan, or highlights results for someone returning |
| Customer analysis history | Account or other logged-in views | Shows recent scores (wrinkles, pores, redness, dryness and other metrics) plus Scan again |
Customer Recommended Products is the block to reach for when you want a list of picks, not an explanation of one SKU. Place it close to analysis results if you use a Section, or on a page shoppers hit after the popup closes.
Customer analysis history is built for logged-in customers. The feature docs say to pair it with Server API or Both storage under Analysis History, so results can persist across devices. Browser-only storage stays on that browser. History itself is part of the Plus ($129) and above set, along with comparison and PDF reports. Storage modes are explained in skin analysis history on Shopify and in the analysis history help article.
The Encouragement Banner is the lightest touch: a prompt, not an explanation. Help copy gives the example "Your personalized skincare is ready" with a scan or shop call to action. Keep the wording cosmetic. Not a medical diagnosis; does not replace a dermatologist.
How to add Product Insight
You need the core scan published before optional blocks will do anything useful. In Apps > Face Age, open Publish, choose Modal or Section, and use Add to theme. The feature docs note that each optional block also has a How to add guide and a Learn more link on that Publish page. Help docs do not list extra unpublished Admin click-paths beyond that and the theme editor, so the steps below follow the storefront extensions help page without inventing more labels.
- Finish Initialize and Publish so the core Modal or Section is active.
- Open Shopify Admin.
- Go to Online Store → Themes.
- Click Customize on your active theme.
- Open a product template (not the homepage or a collection).
- Add an app block and select the Face Age extension for Product Insight.
- Adjust colors, type and placement so the block matches the theme.
- Click Save.
- Preview a product as a shopper who has just completed a test scan, and as a shopper who has not.
Each extension can follow your branding: colors, typography, spacing, layout and button styles. That is the customization the help page documents. If you need the match explanation closer to the add-to-cart button or under the product description, move the block in the theme editor and preview both desktop and mobile.
Recommended pairing from the same help page: keep Product Insight on product pages only, and place Customer Recommended Products close to analysis results. That way a "match" sentence always refers to the item on screen, and a carousel of other picks lives where the shopper already expects recommendations.
When the block stays quiet
A few setups look like bugs and are not:
- The core extension is not published, so there is no latest analysis.
- The shopper has not scanned in a context the store can read (for example you expected server history and they only have a browser result on another device).
- The product is not connected to any concern, so there is no match to explain.
- You added the block to a non-product template, where it is not available.
Work through those four before you rewrite theme code. Then look at Connect products and confirm the SKU has a concern, a severity and no exclusion that would hide it for your test profile.
A sensible rollout
You do not have to enable every optional block on day one.
- Publish Modal or Section and connect products, including at least one exclusion.
- Take a test scan on a phone and confirm the result lists the products you expect.
- Add Product Insight to the main product template and repeat the test on a matching SKU and on a SKU that should not match.
- Add Customer Recommended Products near results if you want a carousel in addition to the single-product explanation.
- Add the Encouragement Banner on the homepage if first-time visitors never notice the scan.
- If you are on Plus and use logged-in accounts, turn on Server API or Both history, then add Customer analysis history where returning customers already look.
Shopify prices, if you are choosing a plan around this work, are Start $59, Plus $129, Growth $249 and Scale $499, with a 7-day trial. Confirm them on pricing. The scan and matching run on Start; count persisted cross-device history as a Plus decision. More on the analysis itself is on the skin analysis feature page and the Shopify page.
If you want the wider industry context for carrying a result onto the page the shopper is already viewing, see latest trends in skin analysis technology. When you trial the block, take the demo checklist with you and open a product page after the scan, not only the results screen.
