This is a merchant guide, not another head-to-head table. If you want named-tool comparisons, use the posts linked below instead of reprinting them here. The scan itself is a cosmetic reading of a photo. Not a medical diagnosis; does not replace a dermatologist.
Key terms
- AI skin analysis: software that reads visible skin attributes from a photo and returns concern scores or labels a store can use.
- Quiz plus scan: a flow where shoppers answer questions and submit a photo, so recommendations can use both inputs.
- Catalog matching: rules that attach your own products to concerns, severity levels, extra conditions and exclusions.
- History and compare: saving earlier scans and placing two of them side by side later.
- Plan model: flat monthly plans versus usage billed on scans, sessions or credits.
How to choose AI skin analysis tool features that matter
Start with the job the tool has to do on your store, then work backward. A brand that wants a homepage widget and three product recommendations has a different shortlist from a retailer that needs history, emails and an API.
Write down four things before you book a demo:
- Where the storefront lives (Shopify theme, headless Shopify, WooCommerce, custom site).
- What the shopper should leave with (product picks, a routine, a downloadable report, an email, or some mix).
- Whether you need the result again next month, or only on the first visit.
- Who on your team will maintain the product rules when you launch a new serum.
Shopify app or API?
An AI-powered face analysis tool that only exists as a hosted widget can be fine until you redesign the theme, launch a headless storefront, or add a non-Shopify site.
Face Age ships the same features as a Shopify app and as an API / custom-code product. On Shopify you install from the App Store, publish a Modal (floating button popup) or a Section (page block), and manage products in Admin. Off Shopify, or on a headless build, you integrate through the API and keep your own UI. For Shopify stores use the App Store plans (Start $59, Plus $129, Growth $249, Scale $499, 7-day trial) or the pricing page. The install choice is covered in Skin Analysis API vs Shopify app and how to integrate AI skin analysis with WooCommerce, WordPress or any website.
If you are on a standard Shopify theme and nobody on staff writes storefront code, the app is the practical path. If the marketing site and the shop do not share a theme, ask how the analysis is delivered outside Shopify.
Quiz plus scan, or scan only?
A scan-only tool asks for a photo and returns concerns. A quiz-only tool never looks at skin. A combined flow does both.
For skincare, the combined flow usually earns its extra step. The photo can surface visible pores or redness a shopper would not name. The quiz captures things a photo cannot: a fragrance allergy, pregnancy, a texture they refuse to use, a budget cap, the climate they live in. Face Age's quiz builder (on every Shopify plan) lets you collect those answers with Select, Multi Select, text and email fields, and then use them as extra conditions or exclusions on top of the scan.
If the catalog is mixed (skincare plus candles, supplements or apparel), a general product quiz may cover more of the assortment than a face scan. That is a catalog question, not a trend question. We compared dedicated quiz builders in best Shopify quiz builder apps for skincare stores 2026 and earlier in Octane AI vs RevenueHunt vs Face Age. For the scan-versus-quiz decision itself, see skin quiz vs AI skin analyzer.
Product matching from your own catalog
This is the criterion stores skip, then regret. Some tools recommend a vendor's own sample set, a generic routine, or products from a shared marketplace. That does not help if you sell twenty serums and need the scan to pick among them.
Ask, in the demo, to connect three of your live products:
- One that should appear for a high reading on a single concern.
- One that should appear only when two conditions are true (for example visible dryness and a quiz answer that they want a cream, not a gel).
- One that must never appear for a reported allergy.
Face Age handles this in Connect products: match a concern and severity from the scan, add conditions from quiz answers, and set exclusions that override inclusions. There is an optional AI suggestion pass that reads your product names and descriptions; you still review every link. The rules are documented in how AI skin analysis picks products. More background sits on the recommendations feature page.
If a vendor cannot show your SKU on a result screen during the trial, keep looking.
History, comparison and reports
A first scan is a product finder. A second scan is a reason to come back. On Face Age those returning-shopper features sit on Plus ($129) and above.
Ask where the earlier scan is stored (browser only, server, or both), whether two scans can sit side by side with plain-language labels (Face Age uses Improved, Regressed and Stable), and whether shoppers can download a branded PDF. Browser-only history is fast and needs no login, but it vanishes if the shopper switches phones. See skin analysis history on Shopify, Improved, Regressed, Stable and the skin analysis PDF report. Personalized AM/PM routines are also Plus and above; see the routine generator.
If you only need a one-time product match, Start may be enough. If you want people to come back and look again, price the plan that actually stores the first scan.
Plan model, trial and gated features
Vendors bill in three broad ways: a flat monthly plan, usage (scans, sessions, credits, quiz takers) or a mix. Flat plans are easier to forecast. Usage plans look cheaper at low traffic and climb when a campaign works.
Face Age's Shopify plans are flat: Start $59, Plus $129, Growth $249, Scale $499, with a 7-day trial. History, comparison, PDF reports, routines and the Klaviyo/Mailchimp connections are Plus and above. That gating matters in a demo. If the salesperson walks you through a before-and-after comparison, you are looking at Plus behavior, not Start. Choosing a Face Age plan walks through each tier without mixing in other price lists.
When you compare other vendors, write down the unit they bill on and estimate a normal month plus a campaign month. Then look at what disappears on the cheapest tier.
Privacy, language and the live storefront
A photo of someone's face is not a newsletter signup. Your privacy policy has to say that you use AI skin analysis, what you store, and how long it stays. Face Age provides a template and shows the analysis in the store's selected language. See AI skin analysis privacy and multilingual skin analysis.
On the theme itself, ask how the scan launches (popup versus a page block) and whether results can follow the shopper onto a product page. Face Age's core publish step is Modal or Section; optional blocks such as Product Insight explain a match next to the product. Placement is covered in Shopify skin analyzer placement. The product-page block is covered in Product Insight on Shopify.

FAQ
How do I choose an AI skin analysis tool for a beauty store? Decide how you will install it (Shopify app or API), whether you need a quiz with the scan, how products map to your own catalog, what returning shoppers should see, how the vendor bills you, and what your privacy policy must say.
What should I consider when buying skin analysis tools? Look at the concerns the scan returns, how those concerns connect to products you already sell, plan gates for history and reports, mobile photo quality, language support and whether recommendations stay inside your catalog.
Is an AI-powered face analysis tool the same as a skin quiz? No. A quiz records what shoppers say. A face analysis tool reads a photo for visible concerns. Some apps, including Face Age, combine both so answers can refine or exclude products after the scan.
Should I pick a Shopify app or an API? Use the Shopify app if you run a Shopify theme store and want Admin setup. Use an API or custom-code install if the store is headless, not on Shopify, or needs the analysis inside your own UI. Face Age ships the same feature set both ways.
Which Face Age plan do I need? Start ($59) includes the scan, quiz builder, product matching and multi-language. History, two-scan comparison, PDF reports, routines and Klaviyo or Mailchimp integrations are on Plus ($129) and above. Confirm details on the pricing page.
